Eat Nutritiously to Fight Holiday Depression

Eat Nutritiously to Fight Holiday Depression

by Leanne Ely, C.N.C

We are completely entrenched in the Christmas season and for so many, also completely entrenched in holiday depression. Having gone through holiday bouts of depression myself, I will never discount anyone's depression. I will tell you however, there are things you can do to fight the oppression of depression. Even if you don't "feel" like it, you can take action against it.

One of the most effective things in battling any sort of depression (and it is a FIGHT!) is feeding yourself right. Poor eating actually helps fuel depression. In the midst of all the scurrying around during the holidays, we end up shortchanging ourselves and eating poorly. We "save up" for the Big Feasts or parties and starve ourselves or eat fast food because we're too busy.

Having a plan really does make a difference. We have a great Christmas menu that gives you a menu for the big meal, recipes and the itemized grocery list to keep the panic level at bay. But even with lists and plans, there's still a lot to do that can cause stress, which only contributes to that downward spiral.

Add poor eating to that and you're going to be struggling big time to keep your chin above water.

To fend off bad eating, make yourself a big pot of soup (in your large Crock Pot) to keep yourself from "going there." You need something easy, delicious and nutritious to get you through.

Below is a recipe for a major Crock Pot full of phytochemically rich veggie soup that you can tweak here and there with the variations I have added to keep you from getting bored. Once the soup has been initially cooked, put it in the fridge and heat up what you need in a small saucepan. The soup is vegetarian and low-carb friendly, too.

And while you're running around over the next few days finishing up your last-minute shopping, remember to drink your water. Water is a nutrient, not a beverage. Drink a lot of water and keep yourself hydrated.

Leanne's Basic Veggie Soup
Serves 12

1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed
1 large onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, pressed
2 large carrots, chopped
2 small celery stalks, chopped
1 medium turnip, chopped
1/4 head cabbage, chopped
2 small russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
2 cups green beans, cut in 1-inch pieces
1/2 teaspoon thyme
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 (28-oz.) can diced tomatoes, undrained
6 cups low sodium chicken broth (or vegetable broth)

In a large soup pot, heat the one tablespoon of the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and cook till nearly translucent, now add the garlic. Don't let the garlic brown and saute another couple of minutes.

Add the rest of the chopped veggies, sauteing for just a minute or two; use extra olive oil if you need it for the rest of the veggies. Remember-you're not cooking them- just sauteing them for the wonderful flavor this quick step will infuse in your soup. Add the thyme and salt and pepper while sauteing. Now put the veggies in the crock-pot, add the tomatoes and broth. Cook on low 7-9 hours (depending on your crock-pot) or high 4-6 hours. Just before serving, gently mash some of the potato chunks against the side of the crock-pot to thicken the soup, give it a stir and serve.

Nutrition Per Serving: 94 Calories; 3g Fat; 7g Protein; 12g Carbohydrate; 3g Dietary Fiber; 0mg Cholesterol; 286mg Sodium. Exchanges: 0 Grain(Starch); 1/2 Lean Meat; 2 Vegetable; 1/2 Fat. Points: 2

SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Grilled cheese sandwiches on whole grain bread and a spinach salad.

Quick Fixes for Variations on the Basic Veggie Soup

Now remember, don't do these to the whole pot of soup! Just the little bit you pull out to fix yourself for lunch, etc. so that you can do all the Quick Fixes.

Quick Fix #1: Tex Mex Veggie Soup. Add some (eyeball it-how much do you want?) black beans (drained and rinsed), a little bit of cumin and chopped cilantro. Top with some tortilla chips and cheese, or serve with a quesadilla.

Quick Fix #2: Tuscan Veggie Soup. Add some (eyeball it again) cannellini (white kidney beans) or white beans (drained and rinsed), a little bit of Italian seasoning and some chopped kale. Cook till heated through and the kale is tender.

Quick Fix #3: Minestrone Veggie Soup. Add some cooked pasta, a little dried basil and top with a fresh grating of Parmesan cheese.

Quick Fix #4: Autumn Veggie Soup. Add some diced acorn squash or butternut squash, a handful of cooked brown rice, a sprinkling of nutmeg and some chopped parsley.

A great way to promote blog is submit on directories

I've listed below the most popular directories that you can submit your new blog to.
  Hope this usefull for resource.

Blog Commenting

When you've first started your blog as I mentioned prior, comments help your blog look more active. Initially you may find that users may not post comments to your blog. It's going to be up to you to get things going.
Have your friends or family members start leaving comments on your blog as it can make your blog seem more active. People like to see activity; if your blog seems dead you'll likely get no responses.
If you would rather not have your family even know about your blog, then you can post comments yourself but as a "Guest" or as registered user instead of admin. Respond to your own posts initially to create activity, then you'll start to see other real users placing comments as well.
What usually works best is to leave a controversial comment. Start making comments that are guaranteed to elicit a response. I've created "characters" before that post controversial statements on my blog to really get user interest going.
This "character" may disagree with a blog posting I made, creating a sequence of posts that increase the activity comments of my post. Once you see that users have taken interest in your blog you can now rely on their posts rather than creating fake ones of your own.
Remember if you are going to do fake comment posts, to space the timing between posts. For example never post two minutes after you've posted as admin, as it's too obvious that you're the same person. Allow some time to pass by before making your "fake user comments post".
If you would rather not do the "fake posts" yourself, some bloggers have actually paid users to reply to posts on their blog. If you go to popular webmaster forums, you'll find that users get paid for making posts on forums.
The usual rate is about .10 cents per post or something within that range. The same theory applies for blog comments. You can hire a set of 10 to 20 people to comment on your posts and pay them a small fee, this way you generate some interest in your blog.
If you post a project on the sites I mentioned previously such as Scriptlance.com or Getafreelancer.com for "Blog Posters", you can find people who can get your blog active, by making comments and paying them a small fee.
You can do this until you get users posting on your site in reply to the posters you have paid. Within a few weeks your blog should be very active. This benefits you in the long run as the search engines will be visiting your site often due to the constant updates.

Free Blog Hosting Sites

Posted by Fajar.A

1) Blogger.com
This site is one of the most if not the most popular free blog hosting site. You can instantly create a blog and start writing on various topics. The positives about using Blogger.com are that it is spidered often, and your blog link will be in the path of the spider, enabling your new blog to be spidered quickly.
Once your blog is spidered, the search engines will continue to visit your blog for updates.
Signup link: http://www.blogger.com/

2) Journalhub.com
This is a newer site, not as popular, but is a very solid choice for blog hosting. Your account is setup instantly.
Signup link: http://journalhub.com/summary.php?op=RegisterStep0

3) Aeonity.com
This site also gives you the ability to create an instant blog site.
Signup link: http://www.aeonity.com/

4) Ebloggy.com
This site also allows free blog hosting.
Signup link: http://www.ebloggy.com/

You can register with any of the above sites to start your own blog, but as I mentioned earlier I prefer to have my own site host my blog. Another option is to have two blogs.
My recommendation would be to create what I like to call a sub-blog, where the blogger.com blog would be a blog you update from time to time that discusses topics dealing with your main blog.
You should have links pointing from your blogger.com blog to your main blog site. The reason you are doing this is because blogger.com is spidered often and by default your blog with blogger.com, which is your sub-blog will also be spidered.
Since your sub-blog will have links to your main blog it can also aid in having your main blog site spidered more quickly.

Hosting Your Own Blog

Hosting your own blog gives search engines a reason to keep revisiting your website. It is important as I mentioned before that you update your blog several times per week.
Below you'll find some recommended free software for hosting your own blog.

WordPress
All my blogging sites use WordPress as I believe it is the best blogging script available. It's very easy to install and you can go live within just a few minutes.
Download: http://wordpress.org/download/
By default WordPress gives you the ability to choose if you want Search Engine Friendly URLS for your blog, but I've taken that a step further.
You will only be able to follow the instructions I'm giving below if you already have WordPress installed.
If you have WordPress installed add this line of code to your "Permalinks" section:
/%postname%.htm
Input the above code into the line that says "Custom Structure" and ensure that you have the check placed in the "Custom, specify below" under Common Options.
What this does is give your blog highly optimizable search engine friendly URLS. Every blog post you make will have a keyword rich URL based on the subject of your blog. For example if your blog post was "Caribbean Recipes" your URL would be http://yoursite.com/caribbean-recipes.html.
It's a nice handy trick to get more search engine friendly URLS out of WordPress to ensure that your keywords appear not only in the subject but also in the page URL.

Dear Computer Lady,
Everyone of my e-mails comes through with a yellow line above the
message portion. I have to remove in order to see everything on it.

How can I get rid of this?
I am using Windows Mail. We have Windows Vista on our computer.
My computer geek says to go to message and then junk mail and then
put message or sender on safe sender's list but that doesn't work.
Any suggestions??
Margaret
Dear Margaret,
You can turn off the blocking of pictures in HTML messages, but
before you do, you should make sure that you have a good antivirus
program installed and updated. Allowing all pictures in your email
to be automatically opened, will leave you a little more at risk
for a virus infection.
In Windows Mail, just follow these directions:
1. Open Windows Mail.
2. Click on "Tools" in the menu bar, then click on "Options".
3. Click on the "Security" tab.
4. About halfway down the Security page, there is a section that
says, "Download Images". Click to remove the check mark in front of,
"Block images and other external content in HTML messages".
5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to save your
changes and close the window.
If you are using Windows Live Mail, it is a little different:
1. Open Windows Live Mail.
2. Click on the tab to the left of the "Home" tab.
3. In the drop-down menu, point to "Options" and then click on
"Safety Options".
4. In the, Safety Options, dialog box, click on the "Security" tab.
5. In the "Download Images" section of the page, click to remove the
check mark in front of "Block images and other external content in
HTML email".
6. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to save your
changes and close the window.

Dear Computer Lady,
Love your site and would love your newsletter. Question: How do I
make gmail my default mail server in irfranview. I do not use
outlook express.
Thanks for your time, Flo
Dear Flo,
Thanks for your email. I added you to my weekly email list.
Unfortunately, you can't add Gmail as your default email server in
Irfanview, because Gmail is web based email, and you are not using
an actual email program.
There is, however, a way you can work around this problem.
You can set up Outlook Express to work with your Gmail account.
Gmail has some great, step by step directions for this at:
https://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77659
Once you have set up Gmail to work with Outlook Express, when you
want to send a picture from Irfanview, your computer will use
Outlook Express to send the picture through your Gmail account.
Hope this helps,
Elizabeth

I have heard that local libraries have "free downloads" to Kindles (and possibly some other readers), but if I download a book at my library, do I have it for only 2 weeks like I would if I checked out a "normal book"? Thanks, Sherry Dear Sherry, I did a little research on Amazon's website and found that questions about loan duration need to be asked at your local library. The Maine state library has a lending period of either 7 or 14 days, the choice appears to be yours. Once the lending period is over, the book remains on your Kindle until you delete it, but you will not be able to open it. It does appear that you can check out the same book again if you did not finish it in the time you had it checked out. I would suggest you check with your local library to see what their ebook lending program is like. 10 Blog Commenting Tips - Don’t Look Like A Comment Spammer

by | posted: November 24, 2011

For this week’s  Quick Blogging Tip Thursday, I’ll offer a few blog commenting tips that will help you with blogging success; after all, that’s what we do here. Thanks to you, we get a lot of blog comments. Unfortunately, we have to delete many blog comments either because they did not read our comment policy or the commenter just doesn’t understand blogging etiquette. The following blog commenting tips are for the group of blog commenters (newbie bloggers) that want to improve their blog commenting success.
  1. Add Value: Post a comment that adds to the quality of the discussion. Do NOT leave a lame comment like, “Nice post, I enjoyed it“.
  2. GET AN AVATAR! You can register free at Gravatar.com that will show an avatar on most blogs. This Avatar is simply an image that is displayed along with your comment on blogs that have this feature enabled. This avatar/image doesn’t have to be your headshot; it can be anything you like. The plain default or blank avatar with comments screams either comment spam or newbie and sends a red flag to every blog admin.
  3. Stay On Topic: This one should be easy but a lot of bloggers fail at it. You should actually READ THE BLOG POST! Pretty simple right? You would think so.
  4. Interact And Engage: Interact with the other commenters. If you have a relevant comment, suggestion or answer for another comment already posted, hit the reply button by that blogger’s name and reply directly to the comment in question. This interaction will build online relationships and your blogging success.
  5. Be Respectful: If you find an error or disagree with the blog post author or another comment, please show some respect. Addressing the issue is fine but personal and/or professional attacks will not be tolerated on this blog and will ruin your reputation on blogs that let the comment stay.
  6. Brand Your Name: Using Keywords is important and that is why we use CommentLuv Premium which includes KeywordLuv BUT branding your name is also important. Ana Hoffman wrote a post for Yaro Starak that really shows the importance of branding your name.
  7. Comment Policy: Find and read the blog’s Comment Policy if they have one. The quickest way to get your blog comment deleted is to ignore the blog’s policies.
  8. Don’t Suck-Up: You don’t always have to agree with everything and tell the blog post author how great he/she is. We know we’re great {joking} but you should always be honest. If you disagree or have a different opinion, then say so – just be respectful (Refer to Blog Commenting Tips #5).
  9. No Deceptive Tactics: When you list your blog/website URL on the comment form and ‘trick‘ our CommentLuv into displaying another blog URL you are using cheap deceptive blog tactics and risk getting banned. This is a common blog commenting tactic used by blog spammers selling SEO backlinks and blog traffic via blog commenting (See Blog Commenting Tips #10).
  10. NEVER EVER Buy Blog Comments: Out of the other blog commenting tips, this may be the most important, “Never Ever buy links or traffic from blog commenting“. These low-life blog commenting sites will ruin your blog and your reputation as a blogger.

Appreciate Bloggers who link to your blog

Posted by on Nov 8, 2011 in Blogging Tips

In general, blogs now make up an intimate world in themselves. As is with any civilized institution, the process of blogging has involved networks and interactions. Therefore, following proper blog etiquette is an undeniable courtesy.
Appreciation is always welcome and if your niche colleagues link with your blog, you need to show this appreciation with the proper gesture. Send in Thank you emails to bloggers who link with your blog but do it with the right flair.
You need to realize what these incoming links do for you to understand the priority level that you need to award these appreciation emails. These links benefit you in three major ways.

Popular Search engine rank boost

Blogs need to influence the target audience but without first being found high on search lists, you cannot expect the magic to begin. There is literally a no-rank void where many blogs are abandoned and all due to their incompetent SEO practices. Thanks to the bloggers who linked to our jupiter images and photos.com discount coupon sites, our blog escaped the black hole, and is not even close to it.
Incoming links to your blog suggests that you already have quality information that even interests other established blog owners. Therefore, when popular search engines crawl your blog posts they will take this fact in to account while deciding on your blog’s rank.

Reader boost

The links spell out that you already have a base of readers. The fact that these readers are actually knowledgeable colleagues, just adds to your blogging potential. The added bonus is that these links will bring in further visitors who are already interested in the niche and therefore, are more likely to convert to subscribers.

Establishing blog as a web brand

Your blog is your offering to the niche audience. As is with any product, the brand name is the stir that gives the extra boost to the sales. Similarly, roping in subscribers for your blog requires you to build up an image that has an impact in the niche.
Incoming links from established blogs can be ego boosts to your blog brand image. Undoubtedly, you can exert this image to your target audience in the same vein.
The common factor in all these advantage points is the necessity of incoming links to your blog. There are many ways that you can start contacts with other blogs to network a deal with them. However, what matters is the follow up gesture that ensures that you consistently be a part of the deal.
After all, there are hordes of niche blogs coming up every day and yet not all of them get a chance to inculcate established blogs as incoming links to their posts.
Therefore, the first step of action is to find out about the bloggers who are linking to your blog. It is not that hard and if you have a submission system where comments and guest posts go via your permission, it means you already know the bloggers that put in guest posts and comment links with your posts.

Some steps to track your incoming link bloggers

Metrics for your blog- You need metrics to track just about every line of progress with your blog process. However, these metrics can come especially handy in finding about the bloggers who appreciate your posts enough to associate their blog links with it. Try Google Analytics, Mint, Sitemeter, or any of the upcoming blog metrics available in the market.

Search engine blog search

The blog search option provided by the popular search engines is an awesome way to track not only the bloggers who link with you but also the suitable blogs that you would want to link with, too. This is a real-time tracking method. However, if you want to focus on a more laid-back approach to tracking, just type in the code link:http://www.yourblog.com. You can type the code in popular search sites such as Google or Yahoo and track all your incoming blog links.
The ultimate task in this endeavor is to draft the right words in the email, which will express your appreciation to the support of these bloggers. Keep it to the point but genial. A semi-formal tone is safest if you are writing for the first time.
It is important that you check out their blogs to include some points of similar interest in your mail. This gesture conveys your credibility as a blogger as well as your interest in the linking relationship. You can also consider blog comments but that should not be an alternative rather make it an addition to the appreciation email.
